Cuba, Social Justice (8 days) - This trip focuses on several aspects of social justice in Cuba. In addition to exploring the rich history of the island, we will examine a variety of social justice issues such as workers rights and equality for lesbians, gays, transsexual and transgendered people by speaking with representatives of the principal groups dealing with those issues in Cuba. We will meet with students, teachers, and members of the community and get a firsthand and intimate look at how social justice issues are being addressed in Cuba. Minimum 10 passengers, maximum 20 Cost: $1,990 not including airfare. January 2 to January 9, 2012
Jungle survival trek (14 days)—In the jungles of the Mosquito Coast of Honduras—very strenuous and challenging. Experience firsthand the primary rainforest of the Mosquito Coast while learning about jungle survival, navigation, and the flora, fauna, and ancient history of the region. Guides—archaeologist Chris Begley, naturalist Jorge Salaverri, and jungle expert Francisco Bueso. $1950 per person from Tegucigalpa. Tentative dates: No dates set yet. Limited to 8 participants
Rafting through the Rain Forest on the Rio Platano, Honduras (14 days)—moderately strenuous– a complete traverse of the Rio Platano, from the headwaters to the ocean. Traveling primarily in rafts, this tour focuses on the flora and fauna of the jungle, and the renowned archaeological sites located along the beautiful Rio Platano in the heart of the Rio Platano biosphere reserve. Guided by naturalist Jorge Salaverri and Dr. Chris Begley, the leading archaeological expert in this region. $2,350 plus international airfare. Tentative dates: July 7th to July 20th, 2012. Limited to 12 participants. This trip was named one of 50 Trips of a Lifetime by National Geographic Traveler.
Mountaineering in Peru (15 days) - extremely strenuous. Three trekking peaks and two mountaineering peaks (17,000 to 18,000 feet) in the Cordillera Blanca or Peru. Previous mountaineering experience not necessary, but a high level of fitness is a must. We will visit archaeological ruins of the Wari culture during our acclimation days, then head out for the mountaineering peaks. Expedition equipment such as sleeping bags and mountaineering boots available for rent. Limited to 10 participants. $2,250 plus international airfare. Tentative dates: June 4 to June 19, 2012.
